How To Use

Turning Your Performance Monitor On/Off:
The Performance Monitor turns on automatically when you begin rowing or if you press On/Off.
The PM turns off automatically after about four minutes of inactivity or if you press On/Off.

Using the Display Options:
  • Elapsed Time—Keeps track of how long you’ve been rowing.
  • Stroke Rate—Indicates your stroke cadence in strokes per minute (spm) and is updated on every stroke.
  • Stroke Output—Displays how hard you pulled on the last stroke. This can be displayed in a choice of three units; press the Display button to cycle through the three units:
  • Pace/500m—Indicates how long it would take you to row 500 meters if you keep the same pace. The faster you go, the smaller the number.
  • Calories/hour—Indicates the rate at which you were burning Calories during the last stroke and displays the approximate number of Calories you would burn in an hour if you keep the same pace. When calculating Calories burned, the PM2 bases the calculation on a 175 pound (80 kg) person with a base rate of 300 Cal/hour. The formula used is as follows:
  • Calories = (4x average watts/1.1639) + 300 Cal/hour x time rowed (in hours)
  • To determine the actual Calories burned for your body weight.
  • Watts—Indicates the power you exerted during the last stroke, in watts. The larger the number, the faster you are going.
  • Total Workout—Keeps an average or cumulative record of your workout.
To View Drag Factor:
  • Press and hold OK and then press Rest. “Drag” will appear in the lower right corner of the screen. Take a few strokes and the PM2/PM2+ will display the drag factor.

To turn drag factor off, repeat the above sequence.

A brand new indoor rower will have a drag factor of about 90–100 at a damper setting of 1 and about 210–220 at a damper setting of 10.

Automatic Mode (Just Row):

Use Automatic Mode when you want to do a workout without a preset distance or time. To use the Performance Monitor in Automatic Mode, simply start rowing. The PM will come on and begin displaying your workout data.

After your workout when you have stopped rowing, the PM will shut off after about four minutes of inactivity. You can also press On/Off to turn the PM off.

Viewing Your Projected Finish:

At any time during a preset distance or time workout, you can successively press Display until “PROJ” appears above your workout time or distance. This display shows your projected finish (time or distance) if you were to keep up your present pace.

Viewing Results:
The Performance Monitor stores your most recent workout in memory, even if the PM is turned off. To view your workout, press Recall.

Viewing Splits or Intervals:
The first time you press Recall, the PM displays the end result of your workout. Each successive press displays information for the previous split or interval for up to 20 splits or intervals, and “Split” will appear on the screen. You can also use the right arrow button to cycle through splits or intervals. Click the up arrow to show information for the next split or interval in succession.

When viewing splits or intervals, you can also access additional information:

  • Press Display to view the split or interval in different units (pace/500m, calories or watts).
  • Press Rest to show splits in cumulative mode. The PM displays “CU” on the screen to indicate that cumulative mode is active. Press Restagain to exit cumulative mode.
  • The Heart Rate box shows your heart rate at the end of that split or interval.
  • The SPM box shows your average strokes per minute for that split or interval.

Troubleshooting

This section is designed to help you diagnose and fix problems with your Performance Monitor.

Monitor Display has Faded or Incomplete Segments:

Symptom: The Performance Monitor display has faded or incomplete segments.

Resolution: Faded or incomplete segments indicate a poor connection between the LCD and the circuit board. To remedy, clean the LCD, the circuit board and the rubber elastomers that make the connections. Using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on a cotton swab, do the following:

  1. Clean the edges of the LCD that make contact with the rubber strips.
  2. Clean the two edges of the rubber strips that make contact with board and LCD.
  3. Clean the two rows of contacts on the circuit board.
  4. Clean the areas of the circuit board where buttons (keypad) make contact.
  5. Clean the back side of the buttons.

If cleaning the monitor does not improve the display, replace the LCD. Replacement LCDs are available from Concept2.

Monitor Dispalying E011 or E012:

Symptom: The Performance Monitor is displaying E011 or E012.

Resolution: This indicates a non-serious error code that is built into the PM. Clear the error code as follows:

  1. Press and hold the four bottom buttons on the face of the monitor (Recallright arrowup arrow and OK).
  2. While holding these buttons, press and release On/Off.
  3. Release the four buttons. The monitor will do some fast counting for 10–15 seconds and then display a number 5 in the center area.
  4. When the 5 appears, press and release On/Off again. Zeros should come up and the monitor should work. If it doesn’t, you may need to replace the PM.
Monitor displaying Other Error Codes (E001-E010):

Symptom: The Performance Monitor is displaying other error codes (E001–E010).

Resolution: These codes may indicate a more serious problem with your monitor. Try to clear the error as follows:

  1. Change the batteries.
  2. Press and hold the four bottom buttons on the face of the monitor (Recallright arrowup arrow and OK).
  3. While holding these buttons, press and release On/Off.
  4. Release the four buttons. The monitor will do some fast counting for 10–15 seconds and then display a number 5 in the center area.
  5. When the 5 appears, press and release On/Off again. Zeros should come up, and the monitor should work. If it doesn’t, you may need to replace the PM.
Monitor Does Not Come On:

Symptom: The Performance Monitor does not come on when you begin rowing.

Resolutions

  • The monitor may need new batteries. Replace the batteries.
  • The batteries may be installed upside down. Reverse the orientation of the batteries.
  • The pickup wire may not be plugged in securely on the back of the monitor. Ensure the plug is inserted completely.

If the monitor continues to be unresponsive, it needs to be replaced with a new PM

Monitor Goes Blank:

Symptom: The entire Performance Monitor screen (not just heart rate display) goes blank when the heart rate cable is plugged in.

Resolution: This is generally caused by a short-circuit that occurs if the heart rate cable is plugged into the PM while the monitor is turned on. If the heart rate cable is still plugged into the PM:

  1. Push ON/OFF once to turn the PM off.
  2. Push ON/OFF again to turn the PM back on again.

If you removed the heart rate cable when the screen went blank:

  1. Push ON/OFF once to turn the PM off.
  2. Plug the heart rate cable into the monitor.
  3. Push ON/OFF again to turn the PM back on again.

We recommend plugging the heart rate cable in only when the PM is off.

Monitor Stays on Zero:

Symptom: The Performance Monitor comes on but stays on zero when you begin rowing.

Resolution: The pickup wire may not be securely plugged in on the back of the monitor. Ensure the plug is inserted completely. If the plug is inserted completely and the problem persists, you may need to replace the pickup wire. Contact Concept2.
